PROJECT SUMMARY
Schley Nelson worked with the Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries in the design of their new dormitory that provides short-term housing for homeless men. The lower floor of the structure serves as overnight shelter every night, while the upper level has long-term facilities for those that have shown a desire to turn their life around. The project’s design reflects on the historic train station that sits near the site with heavy masonry and an arched Romanesque structure as inspiration for the introduction of a modern arched entry and pitched roofs of the new men’s building. The building was also hinted with the symbolic integration of crosses between the windows to show relation of the organization’s Christian Reformed Church sponsorships. Economical finishes of low maintenance and donated materials, such as flooring, were also incorporated throughout the structure to ensure durability and low cost solutions.
