CARDIAC UNIVERSAL BED

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Cardiac Universal Bed Unit renovation that Schley Nelson completed resulted in family friendly areas and safe convenient spaces for patients. The design was also created to assist in the day to day operations of the Hospital staff. The installation of headwalls that were included into the rooms made for easy storage of hospital supplies as well as equipment that could be hidden from sight into the cabinetry, allowing functional and aesthetically pleasing facilities. Comfort for the patients and their families was at the core of the architectural elements instilled in this project through the increased seating area in the alcove space near the room's windows and use of privacy curtains. The design of the unit had an overall goal of being a space that was warm and inviting with soft tones and spacious areas that allowed for easy maneuvering of staff and family alike.

Schley Nelson was the recipient of Honorable Mention for the 2009 ICU Design Citation Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine for the Allegiance Health Cardiac Universal Bed Unit. This 20 bed Cardiac Unit was just one component of a four floor tower addition that integrated the latest in safety, infection control, healing environment, and evidence based thinking that was in support of Allegiance’s expanded Heart Surgery Program.
